Knitting shoulder: the saddest of sports injuries
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 02:21PM I have been suffering in silence.
I have not been able to knit in 2 weeks.
Normally, I would post this on my knitting site, because who really wants to talk about knitting but me, but I'm not. That was a lot of commas. I'm not posting it there (well, not just there) because it is too stupid not to share.
I hurt myself knitting.
Except that is not entirely true. I hurt myself 4 years ago after I decided to cut down a tree by hand with a rusted saw blade.
What? The tree made me mad.
I started out one day just slightly annoyed with the tree that sat in my backyard. It did nothing. It threw little shade, it blocked no sun, it had few limbs and those limbs had terrible little apples on it. Apples that would drop to the ground, rot from the inside out, and draw wasps to my house. Those limbs also prevented me from properly mowing the lawn as they would poke me in the eyeball.
Also, I hate mowing the lawn.
It was my intention to take the rusty saw (the only one I had on hand) and trim a couple of branches that were especially in my way.
I cut one. And then two. But it looked weird and unbalanced. So I cut more and more. And, suddenly I was standing there in front of a tree that looked like this and my arm hurt.
After not being able to lift my arm the rest of the week, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff. And a case of stupidity.
However, the doctor said the stupidity was a preexisting condition.
Flash forward to almost 4 years later. My shoulder hurts on and off when I do stupid things -- like clap too hard or carry Monty's leash in my right hand. I figured out how to work around it and make it not hurt as much. I coped.
Until I started knitting.
I love knitting. I am good at it. I'm fast. I could knit for hours and, in fact, have done so.
Until now.
I can't move my right arm. My fingers go numb and the muscles around my shoulder (where the rotator cuff is) are screaming in pain at all times. I can't carry anything that weighs anything and my arm aches after typing or surfing the web. I have an appointment to see the doctor and will get a physio referral on Friday.
Until it's fixed, I can't knit.
I am heartbroken. I have projects I need to finish! A sweater I planned to have done for a Christmas party the end of this month. Gifts for friends. Things people have commissioned me for.
Also, I'm losing my mind. I'm BORED.
When I tell people why my arm hurts, they just look at me as if to ask "How old are you?"
The Guy reminds me that hundreds of 90 year old women knit safely every day.
I stabbed him with my knitting needle.

I wrecked my shoulder some 35 years ago, throwing a baseball too fast in cold damp weather. Stupidity runs in the family. You inherited your mother's. I still have mine.
I have rotator cuff tendinitis. From playing my French horn. I haven't even played in two years (wah!) and it still gives me trouble when I carry lots of library books. My "sports" injury represents everything geeky in my life...
p.s. Thanks for sharing that photo of the tree!
